Interaction of povidone-iodine compounds, phagocytic cells, and microorganisms.

چکیده
The interaction between povidone-iodine, phagocytic cells, and microorganisms was studied. Three preparations of povidone-iodine were investigated: commercially available povidone-iodine solution Betadine, pure high-molecular-weight povidone-iodine as used in Betadine, and a low-molecular-weight povidone-iodine. Low concentrations of povidone-iodine (approximately 0.005%) have considerable activity in vitro. The concentrations used clinically (0.1 to 20%) are toxic for granulocytes and monocytes. Leukocytes reduce the in vitro microbicidal activity of povidone-iodine. No differences of any importance were found between the three preparations of povidone-iodine.

Background & Aims: Skin contact is one of the ways for disease transmissions. Surgeons and the operation team have many contacts with different patients and so the microorganisms can transfer through their skin. Surgical scrub of hands removes the grease and stains from the skin and also eliminates the microorganisms of hand microbial flora and also prevents the growth of the hand permanent mic...
متن کاملFormulation and Clinical Evaluation of Povidone-Iodine Ophthalmic Drop
Ophthalmia neonatorum is generally defined as conjunctivitis occurring within one month of life. The sources of this infection are environmental organisms or the organisms colonized in the birth canal. Untreated infection can cause blindness, especially if the corresponding organisms areNeisseria gonorrhoeae, or Chlamydia trachomatis. Povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution is an effective antib...
متن کاملEFFECT OF INTRAOCULAR POVIDONE-IODINE SOLUTION IN PREVENTION OF BACTERIAL ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN A RABBIT MODEL
In order to determine the effects of intraocular 0.05% povidone-iodine preparation in the prevention of bacterial endophthalmitis in a rabbit model, 28 albino rabbits were randomly assigned to 4 equal groups. A concentration of 5x 108 organisms (0.03 mL) in logarithmic growth phase of S. epidermidis, S. aureus, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, were injected separately in the a...
متن کاملEffect of surgical site skin preparation with povidone-iodine 7.5% and 10% with chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine 10% on microbial count
Background and Aim: Preparing the skin for surgery with antiseptics is a standard measure to reduce surgical site infection. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of skin preparation at the surgical site with povidone-iodine 7.5% and povidone-iodine 10% antiseptics with chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine 10% on the microbial count. Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 80 patient...
